Helmed by skipper Petr Kochnev, the Canados Sailing Team won the main category of the 2024 MGM Macao International Regatta, using the Beneteau First 40.7 Unified Design Group boats.
The German-flag team ended four days of competition on top after eight races in a fierce competition with second-place-overall Team Windy from Estonia.
The Canadian Vivat Sailing team took third place.
Teams from 11 different countries or regions participated in this year’s event. On the second out of three category competitions, China’s Muwu BBQ took the final win at the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area Cup Regatta (IRC group).
Muwu BBQ took the final win even if the boat was disqualified on the last of eight races due to a premature start on the final event of Sunday.
Macau’s WanBooFish Sailing Team came second to Muwu BBQ, with third place overall on the IRC group taken by another mainland team, Sailingin, which beat the Zhongshan Sailing Team to third place after the it was also penalized with a black flag (disqualification) due to a premature start.
In the regatta dedicated to the smaller boats (International Catamaran Invitational – Hobie 16 unified design group), Thailand dominated, coming first and second.
First place went to Team Yacht Racing of Thailand (Damrongsak Vongtim and Kitsada Vongtim) while Team Fenix (Teerapong Watiboonruang and Kan Kachachuen) came in second. In third place overall after 12 races was Korean duo Kim Keun Soo and An Sun Jin (Team Jeonbuk).
Two teams represented Macau in this racing category.
They were Team AVM – from the local Sailing Association, which finished in 12th position and Team Pintos which finished last (15th) after a difficult start to the event.
Team Pintos failed to complete the second and third races and did not start in the fourth. The team was also unable to complete the ninth race and failed to present itself at the start of the last two races of the event.
