The government is ready to launch a public consultation on the election laws that rule both the election of the Chief Executive (CE) and the members of the Legislative Assembly (AL).
Details on the public consultation document and on which parts the government seeks to make amendments will be only known later today when a press conference will be held by the Office of the Secretary for Administration and Justice, André Cheong, on the topic.
The last time that the laws were amended was in 2017 for the law that regulates the AL elections, and in 2018 for the election of the CE.
Each term of the Macau CE has a duration of five years, with members eligible for the reelection for a second five-year term. The 33 lawmakers that compose the AL have a term duration of four years.
Currently, the composition of the AL is determined through direct election (14 lawmakers), indirect election (12 lawmakers), and direct appointment of the CE (seven lawmakers). The CE is elected by a college composed of 400 members. RM
