Erick Tsang Kwok-wai has been appointed as the new Director of Immigration Department of Hong Kong, to be put into effect immediately. Tsang, 52, joined the Immigration Department as an assistant immigration officer in April 1987. In 2014, he became deputy director of Immigration.
Following the inauguration, the media asked Tsang about the issue surrounding Lee Bo. The newly appointed director said that “the case is still under investigation; the department will inquire with the Department of Justice based on the situation. There is no firm evidence that Lee Bo committed a crime, therefore no arrest has been made yet.”
Regarding detainment policies, he emphasized that the future policy will only target those who violate the refugee regulations, which means that real refugees will not be affected. Chan Kwok-ki, the now former immigration director, had been appointed to the position in March 2011. After 33 years of service, he is now leaving on early-retirement.
