Macau has witnessed a significant surge in jaywalking cases, with 4,081 instances recorded from January to May this year, a staggering 4.5 times higher than the same period last year.
This trend in pedestrian violations is part of a broader increase in traffic accidents, with 6,409 incidents reported during the same period, a nearly 25% increase year-on-year.
The rise in accidents has also led to an increase in fatalities, with two deaths recorded during the period.
Total fines increased 22% to MOP82.14 million. Statistics from the Public Security Police have revealed that May alone saw 641 cases of pedestrians illegally crossing the road.
Moreover, the data reveals a range of other traffic violations in Macau.
From January to May, there were 962 cases of drivers using mobile phones while behind the wheel (1.2 times higher year-on-year).
Additionally, 423 cases were recorded of drivers failing to wear seatbelts, a 1.3-fold rise.
While illegal parking cases decreased 3.3% to 268,000, there were still 14,000 instances of motorists disobeying traffic signs, a 2.5 increase from last year.
In addition to these violations, the police have also cracked down on taxi-related offenses, with 378 violations recorded from January to May, as cited by TDM.
This includes instances of overpayment (11 cases) and refusal of taxis (130 cases), as well as 49 cases of white-plate taxis. Nadia Shaw
