Sofia Loren and Valentino have received a standing ovation from a packed house of fashion and Hollywood A-listers during the third edition of the Green Carpet Awards honoring progress toward sustainability.
Loren, stunning in a black gown and glistening diamond necklace, presented Valentino with an award for legacy achievement yesterday [Macau time]. Loren, 85, said the 87-year-old designer “revolutionized the world of fashion through his elegance, passion and style.”
The award capped an evening marking progress in creating more ecological and social consciousness in the fashion industry — recognized as the second-most polluting after oil.
Honorees included women in India trained to transform discarded saris into contemporary, hand-embroidered attire and divers who recover lost fishing nets from the sea floor that are upcycled into nylon for fashion houses like Prada.
Inspiring speeches on diversity, equal pay rule Emmy night
Emmy night is always a chaotic mix of the humorous, the emotional and the inspirational, mixed with some major sequins and glitter. And on this Emmy night, all those elements came together in one glorious moment: Billy Porter’s win as best actor in a drama for “Pose,” the first openly gay actor to win the award (pictured).
“The category is love, y’all!” he crowed to the audience upon arriving onstage.
He then met the historical moment by quoting James Baldwin. “It took many years of vomiting up the filth I was taught about myself and halfway believed before I could walk around this Earth like I had a right to be here,” went the powerful quote. “I have the right. You have the right. We all have the right!”
But Porter’s speech wasn’t the only knock-your-socks-off moment. Michelle Williams gave the audience an eloquent and impassioned lesson on the importance of equal pay for women, especially women of color.
And Patricia Arquette paid tearful tribute to her late transgender sister, issuing a rousing call for better treatment of transgender people.

Fan gatherings happened all over the world. But the most ambitious party plan was the illumination of the bat signal.
It started at Fed Square in Melbourne, Australia. The signal is also appearing in 13 other cities, including Tokyo, Berlin, Rome, Paris, London, Montreal, Sao Paulo and Johannesburg, as well New Yor City’s Domino Sugar Refinery.
Los Angeles also celebrated with a fan experience concert and the Batman Inaugural 5K run.
