MP fines its driver for indecent act, pledges enhancements in system

The Public Prosecutions Office (MP) has imposed a fine of 15-day salary’s worth on a driver who committed an indecent act publicly in May, local media has reported.

In May, the MP announced that one of its drivers was spotted showing an indecent gesture towards others. The driver was driving an MP vehicle while seen violating traffic laws.

In a statement issued May 3, the MP merely announced an internal investigation had been instigated, adding that the matter would be handled seriously. Since then, no update as to the type and severity of punishment had been announced.

Around this time a senior prosecutor was accused of corruption, and members of the public called in to a radio show to express their views. Meanwhile, a member of the audience pointed to the indecent gesture case, asking for updates, according to a report by local media Macao Daily News.

Recapping its disciplinary procedures against the driver, the MP revealed the driver had been fined for 15 days’ worth of his salary. The punishment was made pursuant to the General Regulations Governing Public Service Workers in Macau, the MP added.

Some days ago, the MP announced a deputy prosecutor general was allegedly part of a criminal syndicate that obstructed justice and took bribes in several cases. The syndicate consisted of a lawyer and two other people, besides the senior prosecutor.

The MP said this case is now in judicial procedure, with the Court of Second Instance scheduling the case for a hearing.

Commenting on the case, the MP said that they regret its occurrence. The MP said that it will strengthen its own institutional procedures, plug loopholes and will seriously investigate and deal with any illegal behavior that violates laws and disciplines within the organization.

The MP reiterated that as part of the judiciary, it will impose rigorous requirements on its team, pursuant to laws and regulations, as well as duly exercise its legal responsibilities. Meanwhile, it said that the MP welcomes suggestions from the public.
