chinese-cemetery-11636258A new building to preserve ash and bone boxes will commence operations by the end of this year.
According to a report by Hou Kong Daily, the Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau (IACM) said a total of 8,295 boxes – comprising 6,270 ash boxes and 2,025 bone boxes – will be available to the public.
IACM claims that the boxes will meet local demand for the next ten years and that it is also offering environmentally-friendly tree burials. The department currently offers 440 tree burial positions.
Last September, IACM rolled out free eco-burial services in a park inside a municipal cemetery in Taipa. IACM has received 29 applications for tree burial service, and has provided the service to 28 applicants to date.
IACM administration committee member Leong Kun Fong said 70 percent of local residents choose cremation as opposed to tomb burial, where the price of private graveyards ranges from 40,000 to millions of patacas, depending on the area.
People are increasingly interested in ‘green’ funerals like tree burials, and dozens of citizens have registered in advance for their late relatives. Staff reporter
