According to the Public Security Police Force (PSP), around 900 protesters marched on China’s National Day holiday on October 1. The majority of the demonstrators were pre-sale buyers of the Pearl Horizon development who demanded further action from the government regarding their situation.
The demonstrators held banners and posters with sentences like “I want to meet Chief Executive. Give back my home quick!” among others conveying similar messages.
“We’re now all caught up in an impasse. We’re here today to appeal to the authorities to find us a solution. The government has to also further supervise Polytech Group’s assets as we’re afraid the developer will intentionally move its money away and file for bankruptcy,” said Kou Meng Pok, president of Pearl Horizon Proprietors Association to TDM.
In a prompt response from the government, the office of the Secretary for Administration and Justice, Sonia Chan, issued a statement reacting to the demonstration: “The event is about a conflict of interest between the owners and the promoter company and it can only be solved by the law, which includes court actions in case the situation can’t be solved through negotiations,” the statement read, reaffirming the “attention” of the government to the situation and its clear intentions to act in accordance with the Land Law.
But Pearl Horizon protesters were not the only ones on the streets last Saturday. There were also other groups urging the government to take action in support of their cause. Among them was a group calling for restrictions and tighter supervision on imported labor in order to better protect the interests of local residents.
According to the PSP, all of the demonstrations took place in an orderly manner without any reports of conflict. RM
