Pun Weng Kun says ‘training of local athletes is important’

Successfully organizing Macau’s big sporting events, the training of local athletes, expanding the network of public sports facilities and continuing to develop “Sport for All” activities are the tasks that the new president of Macau Sports Development Board (ID), Pun Weng Kun, elects as priorities for his two-year mandate that was yesterday publicized in his swearing-in ceremony, held at the government’s headquarters.
The former vice president of ID, speaking on the sidelines of the ceremony, anticipated a smooth path of “following the plan that was previously established.”
“From my side I am not anticipating any challenge or pressure because my team and I are used to major works and we have built a good team to face any challenge and to successfully organize the big events. I am confident that we will fulfill our mission,” Pun Weng Kun said.
He hopes that the “high level sports events” that the territory holds annually can “attract local people to assist and also attract people from abroad to visit Macau and become more familiar with the territory.”
In order to provide local athletes with better conditions to train and develop their skills the ID is planning the creation of an Athletes Training and Formation Center that is currently “in a stage of negotiation with several entities that are finalizing the project and will shortly start contacting the Land, Public works and Transport Bureau [DSSOPT] in order to boost the project forward,” Pun said, adding that “only after the launch of the public tender for the construction will it be possible to have a clear idea of how long will take to build.”
Cooperation with the University of Macau is also a major task needed to expand the network of public sports facilities. “At the moment we are talking with the University [of Macau] Rector in order to secure from the institution nine facilities to include in the network [of public sports facilities] and so far the feedback is good. Soon we will have good news to announce to the population,” the president of ID added.
