Macau Holy House of Mercy unveiled a plaque at its elderly home yesterday in recognition of Sands China’s assistance after Typhoon Hato.

A MOP2 million donation from Sands China in December helped to cover the costs of repairing the facility and the restoration work is now complete.

The storm in August caused extensive damage to the elderly home, including major structural damage to its roof.

“We are very grateful to Sands China for its generous contribution, which allowed us to repair the damage to our elderly home after the typhoon,” said Macau Holy House of Mercy’s president Antonio José de Freitas.

“The residents are happy to have their home restored to a suitable condition, and we wanted to commemorate the occasion by mounting a plaque as an expression of our appreciation.”

Yesterday, Freitas provided Sands China president, Wilfred Wong, with an inspection tour of the roof before Wong and Freitas unveiled the plaque together.

“It’s wonderful to see the elderly home back in order, and our appreciation goes out to Holy House of Mercy for the valuable service they provide to society. We are humbled by the kind gesture of mounting a plaque honouring our company,” said Wong.

The donation from Sands China helped cover the costs of the repairs, which included rebuilding and repainting the rooftop, restoring water-damaged ceilings and walls, fixing leaks, and installing new water outlets and pipes.

Sands China has pledged to donate a total of MOP30 million to support Macau’s typhoon disaster relief, with another MOP35 million in aid pledged by the Adelson Family Foundation.
