Statistics | Key industries record growth in employee numbers

The Statistics and Census Service (DSEC) has released the results of the Survey on Manpower Needs and Wages for the first quarter of 2016 which covers the sectors of manufacturing, hotels, restaurants, insurance, financial activities, electricity, water and gas supply, child-care and elderly care. Most of these sectors recorded growth in the number of employees.
The survey shows that by the end of the first quarter of 2016, the number of employees within sectors of hotel (+8.3 percent), restaurant (+3 percent), insurance (+4.7 percent), financial activities (+5.6 percent), childcare (+9.6 percent) and elderly care (+3.1 percent) all registered a year-on-year increase.
Meanwhile, the manufacturing sector saw a decrease in the number of employees equal to approximately 3.5 percent, and the number of employees in the electricity, water and gas supply sector remained stable.
Average earnings in March were up year-on-year in the sectors of restaurants (+3.2 percent), financial activities (+4.3 percent), electricity, water and gas supply (+1.6 percent), childcare (8.4 percent) and elderly care (13.9 percent).
On the other hand, year-on-year decreases in average earnings were recorded for the month of March in the sectors of hotels (-0.5 percent), manufacturing (-3.5 percent) and insurance (-2.1 percent).
In the first quarter, the employee turnover rate, employee recruitment rate and job vacancy rate  in hotels fell by 0.3, 0.7 and 0.6 percentage points respectively year-on-­year. In restaurants, the job vacancy rate increased by 1.1 percentage points year-on-year, while employee recruitment rate (6.5 percent) and the employee turnover rate (5.5 percent) were similar to a year earlier.
A total of 90,982 employee participants from the surveyed industries attended training courses in the first quarter. These include courses organized by employment establishments or in collaboration with other institutions.
