Transport Bureau aware of attempts to fake vehicle inspections

Some motorists are attempting to make illegal modifications to their vehicles, tampering with inspection results in a bid to get such vehicles approved for a return to public roads, the Transport Bureau (DSAT) has said.

According to DSAT’s statement, the cases mostly involve motorcycles. Exhaust pipes are drilled and connected to another tube, with the resulting air intake diluting exhaust emissions and altering exhaust pollutant emission values.

The Bureau said it is aware of such cases and will immediately fail such vehicles upon inspection. Owners must then carry out another special inspection for which they will have to pay an additional fee.

The DSAT has called on vehicle owners not to make such modifications, describing them as acts of bad faith that also corrupt the engine’s inner workings, putting both the vehicle and rider at risk.

The Road Traffic Law states that whenever there is a change in the characteristics of the vehicle, it must undergo additional inspection in order to secure approval for a return to the public roads.
