Yesterday, a group of students from the Department of Communication at the University of Macau (UM) launched a book that constitutes their capstone graduation project. The book is titled “City Walk in Macau.”
The students sought to challenge traditional learning approaches and mindsets. They promoted the act of strolling as an effective way to study the city of Macau. The book also draws attention to the act of walking in cities.
“City Walk in Macau” stretches 196 pages, with 20 articles divided into five sections. These include the categories: livelihood, intoxication, roots, culture, and corner.
Through interviews with ordinary citizens, experts, and scholars, as well as in-depth readings and analysis of old newspapers and historical documents, the students present articles that unveil stories about the entertainment industry, Southeast Asian and Chinese community, culture, and Ká Hó village in Macau, all through the lens of five distinct walking trails.
Student Elory Kuang, the book’s editor, said that this year’s publication differs from the previous magazine format as it is presents as a portable book. The book includes sketches of landscapes and traces of street corners, allowing readers to carry it while they explore the city.
Starting next month, the book will be distributed to different libraries in Macau. Interested individuals are welcome to borrow the book. An electronic version can also be viewed for free at its website, https://online.fliphtml5.com/nflqs/abhx/. Staff Reporter
