Gov’t announces vision for Border Gate future

The government has published a report detailing its plans for the future of the Border Gate, which will see the area transformed into a tourism, commercial and transportation hub. The plan, which follows five years of study from the government, is likely to take at least a decade to construct and cost in excess of MOP4 billion.

The plan suggests reclaiming land currently in use by the Police Tactical Intervention Unit and the Workers Stadium adjacent to the current site of the Border Gate. These would then be excavated to allow for deep, underground structures and facilities, and finally linked with each other.

Two specific proposals exist for the construction works, with one taking about a year longer to complete for an additional MOP200 million, public broadcaster TDM reported.

The Border Gate is the most popular conduit for visitor arrivals traveling to Macau. In August, around 1.41 million people – half of all visitors that month – entered Macau via the Border Gate.

The underground bus terminal is currently closed to allow public departments to carry out renovation works, which were badly affected by Typhoon Hato. It is expected to partially reopen in the second quarter of 2019. DB
