7.5 percent of private school teachers quit every year

The Education and Youth Affairs Bureau (DSEJ) announced that the number of teaching staff at local private schools has seen stable growth throughout the last decade, although an average of 7.5 percent leave the profession every year, according to a report by TDM.
During the academic year of 2014/2015, there were 5,552 private school teachers. 4,600 belong to schools under DSEJ’s free education system; 369 of the remainder have retired, representing 6.6 percent of the total number of teachers. Teachers who provide education services at lower age levels represent the majority of those who exited the industry. Seventy-five percent of those who left taught the third to sixth grades, while those teaching the first to second grades accounted for 25 percent. These figures include 37 teachers who retired during the year.
The department also said that in the 2014/2015 academic year, there were 196 expatriate teachers, representing 3.5 percent of the total number of teachers. Approximately 60 percent of the total comprises teachers in schools where classes are taught in foreign languages.

UM wins second prize at national integrated circuit design contest

A University of Macau (UM) team from the State Key Laboratory of Analog and Mixed-Signal VLSI (AMS-VLSI Lab) and Faculty of Science and Technology won second prize at the National University Integrated Circuit Design Contest (NUICDC), one of China’s most influential and prestigious contests in the field.
Led by Prof Lu Yan, the InPoCit team consisted of masters students Luo Ziyang and Huang Yuanqing, and PhD student Mao Fangyu. According to a UM press release, their design and presentation received positive comments from the panel of judges, which comprised both industry experts and academics.
Co-organized by the Beijing Education Committee and the Beijing Electronic Association, the contest attracted more than 300 teams from 55 universities in China; including Shanghai Jiao Tong University, Huazhong University of Science and Technology, Sun Yat-sen University, and Wuhan University.
