Employment holds stable

The general unemployment rate for the three months ending January 2019 stood at 1.7 percent, according to the latest data from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), while the unemployment rate for local residents and the underemployment rate remained unchanged from the previous period (October-December 2018) at 2.4 percent and 0.4 percent respectively.

The total labor force at the end of January amounted to 398,400, while the labor force participation rate was 71.5 percent. Total employment was 391,500 and the number of employed residents totaled 287,100, up by 3,500 and 3,300 respectively from the previous period.

Analyzed by industry, employment in gaming and junket activities increased while that in the transport, storage and communications sectors decreased.

The number of unemployed persons held stable at 6,900 people, similar to the previous period. Fresh labor force entrants searching for their first job accounted for 13.7 percent of the total unemployed, up by 1.9 percentage points.

In comparison with a year earlier, the labor force participation rate rose by 1.7 percentage points, the unemployment rate dropped by 0.1 percentage points while the underemployment rate held steady. DB
