Retail sales decline in second quarter

Both the value and volume of retail sales recorded a year-on-year decrease in the second quarter of 2019, according to the latest data from the Statistics and Census Service. In this period, the sales value fell by 0.8% to MOP17.86 billion and the sales volume dropped by 0.5%.

Among the major retail activities, the sales values of adults clothing dropped by nearly 11%, while that of watches, clocks and jewelry fell 4.2%. However, the sales value of automotive fuels (+7.3%) and goods in department stores (+6.7%) increased.

The value of retail sales in the second quarter of 2019 decreased by 12.7% as compared with the revised figure of MOP20.46 billion in the first quarter.

In respect of retailers’ comments, 46.3% of the interviewed retailers expected stable business performances in the third quarter of 2019, 39.9% envisaged unfavorable business prospects, and 13.8% predicted a favorable outlook. DB
