There was a rise in April visitor arrivals of 5.3% month-to-month to 794,819, totaling 2,533,247 tourist arrivals in the first four months of the year.
According to data from the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), the figure was an upsurge of 7,098.8% year-on-year, given the fact that borders closed in March last year.
Overnight visitors and same-day visitors added up to 450,579 and 344,240, respectively.
The average length of stay of visitors shortened by 5.7 days year-on-year to 1.6 days, with that of overnight visitors (2.9 days) reducing notably by 18.2 days, on account of the adjustments in pandemic prevention measures.
Currently, only visitors from the Greater China region are allowed to enter the SAR. There is no timeline yet for when the city’s borders will open to other tourists and non-resident workers.
Broken down by source of visitors, the number of mainland visitors rocketed by 6,861.3% year-on-year to 730,934, with 300,467 of them travelling under the Individual Visit Scheme. Visitors from the nine Pearl River Delta cities in the Greater Bay Area totalled 383,623, of whom 47.3% came from Zhuhai. Meanwhile, there were 56,760 visitors from Hong Kong and 7,091 from Taiwan.
This year, the government has a target of six to 10 million tourist arrivals.
Just recently, the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO) said it expects that the number of visitors coming into Macau will continue to grow steadily over the summer holiday period, expecting the city to reach 40,000 visitor arrivals on weekends.
MGTO director Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes has said that the hospitality industry is confident about the summer vacation period, adding that the government will continue to promote Macau as a destination in several cities on the mainland through the “Macao Week” events, as well as online promotions.
Recently, together with local hotel operators and companies, the government promoted the city in Jiangsu. A similar event is set to be hosted in Shanghai and Chongqing.
