Deputy director of the Macau Government Tourism Office (MGTO) Ricky Hoi said that over 110,000 people arrived in Macau between June 29 to June 30. This figure indicates the policies restricting casinos’ freebie offerings did not deter travelers, as some operators recently scaled back on complimentary snacks and non-alcoholic beverages due to flagging gaming revenues.
Hoi believes most visitors come to Macau primarily to explore the local culture, attractions, entertainment and cuisine offerings rather than seek out freebies at casinos. As the tourism economy’s main driver, Macau’s casinos attract many patrons, but other elements of the destination also draw crowds.
The steady weekend arrival numbers suggest the restrictions on operators’ promotions have not discouraged tourism to Macau, which remains core to the region’s economic blueprint.
Last month, Macau government has reportedly directed casino operators either to restrict or stop providing complimentary snacks to their patrons, according to multiple sources.
