Work on the expansion of Macau International Airport is slated to commence before the end of 2024, with a completion target of 2030. The project aims to reclaim 1.3 square kilometers of land off the existing runway to accommodate additional gates and taxiways, significantly enhancing the airport’s capacity.
According to the Macau International Airport Co Ltd. (CAM), this expansion will increase the airport’s annual passenger handling capacity to 15 million, representing a substantial boost from current levels.
The initiative comes as Macau’s aviation sector experiences a robust recovery post-pandemic, with commercial flights increasing by 28.5% in August compared to last year.
Recent statistics reveal that the airport managed 5,218 flights in August alone, while air cargo volume surged by 78%, reaching 9,542 tons. Over the first eight months of 2024, flight operations rose by more than 63%, and air cargo volume nearly doubled while the volume of air cargo rose by nearly 98% to 67,328, indicating a robust recovery in travel and trade.
