Offshore revelations unlikely to be probed

Speaking on the sidelines of the presentation of the petition calling for a rethink on the new Urban Renewal Council, Jason Chao said that ANM are “looking forward to the full disclosure of the Panama Papers.”
“We know that there are Macau communities involved in the scandal but we need to conduct more thorough research into the papers to see the extent of the involvement,” said Chao, before adding that the use of offshore companies by wealthy individuals and corporations “was not new to us.”
“Of course the public prosecutor and the judiciary bodies should always go after and investigate corruption claims but unfortunately over the past few years we have submitted numerous criminal complaints and corruption complaints regarding the government [and] we have not seen any productive investigative results.”
“The bigger problem is: do we still have faith in the judiciary bodies?” Chao posited.
“We don’t see that the efforts in combating corruption have been very consistent [and] if we cannot count on the judiciary police in Macau [to fully investigate the claims] then maybe we have to depend on the investigations from other jurisdictions,” he suggested.
