Briefs | F1: Hamilton wins Hungarian GP

Lewis Hamilton won the Hungarian Grand Prix from pole position yesterday to extend his championship lead over Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton was untroubled as he secured a second straight win, fifth of the season and 67th overall. But Mercedes missed out on a 1-2 as Valtteri Bottas was overtaken by Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen with five laps to go. Bottas and Vettel touched cars during the overtaking move, with some debris flying off the Mercedes. In a dramatic finish, Bottas lost control of his car as he bumped Daniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull off the track as he was about to be overtaken. Bottas was told on team radio to give the position back to Ricciardo, who finished a commendable fourth after starting 12th.

Football: Rooney scores first MLS goal

Wayne Rooney scored his first MLS goal to help D.C. United beat the Colorado Rapids 2-1 on Saturday night. United, who won for just the second time since May 19, took a 2-1 lead on an own goal in the 90th minute when Ulises Segura’s cross deflected off Colorado’s Niki Jackson into the net. Rooney, the 32-year-old English star who ranks second with 208 career Premier League goals, opened the scoring in the 33rd minute. Rooney ran onto a pass from Luciano Acosta and slipped it between the legs of Tim Howard into the net.
