Australian jockey dies in training accident

Australian jockey Carly-Mae Pye died yesterday from injuries sustained when the horse she was riding broke its front legs during a training run, throwing her head-first into the track. The 26-year-old Pye was riding on Monday in a jump-out, which simulates the start of a race in barriers in non-race conditions. Pye had severe head, neck and chest injuries and was put on life support in Rockhampton Base Hospital, near where the accident occurred, where she later died. The horse had to be destroyed. Pye’s partner, trainer Tim Cook, was at the track when the accident happened. Queensland Racing chief Darren Condon says Pye, a former equestrian rider, was “probably one of the hardest-working people in racing … you wouldn’t find a greater horsewoman anywhere in the state.”
