Bill Chou, former professor at the University of Macau is set to visit Hong Kong as a guest lecturer, the South China Morning Post reported.
Also serving as vice-
president of the pro-democracy group New Macau Association, Bill Chou faced disciplinary action at UM this year for allegedly imposing his political views on students. In August, the scholar revealed that the university was not planning to renew his contract.
Bill Chou did not disclose where he will next be teaching, due to his concerns about expected pressures on his new employer. “I don’t want pro-government people from Macau to influence the staff decisions of my next employer,” he said.
Chou attended an assembly organized by pro-democracy activists on Friday at the UM campus in Hengqin, which advocated for academic freedom. From 2002 until now, he worked as an associate professor of political science at the University of Macau.
Political scientist and professor at the University of Saint Joseph, Eric Sautede, was also removed from office this year, for expressing his political views.
The two cases have raised concerns over the state of academic freedom in Macau. Chou believes that, in Hong Kong, he will find a more open society, where students are more “open-minded, and socially and politically engaged.”
