Chief Executive Chui Sai On concluded his Beijing trip yesterday and claimed that he is going to launch administrative reform early next year and control the growth of government spending.
“In terms of administrative reform, we will start the relevant works in January [next year]. I believe that I will introduce [the reform] to everybody in a transparent manner,” he said.
Mr Chui also reiterated two principles: he wants to control the number of public servants, and not increase public spending.
“These are what we are going to focus on in the future,” he said.
In his election platform, Chui Sai On promised a simplified government structure and tackling the public departments’ overlapping functions.
Moreover, the CE again refused to give any clue on the candidates for future Secretaries.
“Please be considerate. This (choosing new Secretaries) is my task and it takes time. If I were going to name someone, it would be unfair to others. I am also not going to further disclose anything,” he said.
Chui Sai On said that he has already gathered some “positive energy” to deal with the deep-seated issues in the region, such as the lack of land resources, the dominance of the gaming industry and the need for economic diversification.
He also thinks that most of the protests in Macau are rational and legal. However, he feels that the way young people express themselves has changed. He thinks that the most important issue for the government is to adapt to the changes and enhance mutual communication. The CE also urged young people to learn how to communicate and provide solutions to different issues.
