Families urged to join energy-saving lucky draw

The Office for the Development of the Energy Sector (GDSE) has jointly launched a lucky draw activity with the CEM and the Macao General Union of Neighborhood Associations (known has Kai Fong), aiming to encourage “a five-percent reduction in electricity consumption” among local households.
“The objective of the event is to appeal to citizens to save energy. As local families are our main targets, we have set this goal for them,” said GDSE representative Lio In Kuan at a media presentation this week. He added that the authorities wished to extend the five-percent saving goal, which currently exists within public departments, to local families.
GDSE’s estimate suggests that last year over 210,000 households across the region generated more than 1,080 gigawatt-hours of power. Factoring in a targeted five-percent reduction in every family every month, Macau’s annual reductions could reach 54 million kilowatt-hours in electricity consumption. This amount roughly equates to the amount of carbon absorption that 3.1 million trees would be able to cope with.
Noting the significance of power-saving, the organizers invited the public to take part in the event, in which participants are required to minimize their power consumption by at least five percent from July to September. This goal compares to the consumption recorded in the equivalent period of last year. Target-achievers would compete for the top three grand prizes worth MOP10,000 in coupons each, while another 80 prizes, each worth MOP500 in coupons, would also be up for grabs.
As part of the government’s annual efforts to draw public attention to the benefits of energy-saving, the event is also the first of its kind in a series of events, which began on Sunday. The authorities said that they wish to gauge the public response to the event this year to see if it needs further refinement in the future.
The lucky draw will take place on November 16 this year, with its results being released one week later. Staff reporter
