The Health Bureau (SSM) revealed that an 82-year-
old woman has been confirmed to be the first local case of dengue fever this year.
She is now in a stable condition.
The authorities believe that the patient contracted the disease near the Camões Garden. Information suggests that the woman was admitted to hospital on August 17 due to high blood pressure.
She developed a high temperature around a week ago and was diagnosed with dengue fever two days ago.
Since the woman has not left Macau in the previous two weeks, it is believed that she was infected in the city. The woman believes that she contracted the mosquito-borne viral disease near the Luís de Camões Garden.
SSM dispatched workers in the afternoon two days ago to areas near the park to eliminate the mosquitoes there.
Lam Chung, the head of SSM’s Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, said that there might be more dengue fever cases to arise after this first case.
“As a local case is reported, there should be other infection cases as well. Some mosquitoes carrying the virus are still here, and they will continue to spread the disease to others. So, starting from today, we will have some advertising work to do in the areas nearby, and we will kill the mosquitoes with chemical products,” Mr Lam told TDM.
The Civic and Municipal Affairs Bureau also said that they will coordinate with the Health Bureau to carry out anti-mosquito work around the residence of the patient.
Authorities have called on residents to better protect themselves against mosquitoes. JPL
