Former vice-governor of Guangdong expelled from Communist Party

The former vice-governor of Guangdong, Liu Zhigeng, is under investigation for his reported involvement in corrupt activities, the Central Commission for Discipline Inspection (CCDI) announced on Monday.
The Communist Party expelled Liu from the Party and Civil Service, subsequently handing him over to the judiciary department. The ongoing investigation into Liu’s activities was announced on February 24th.
The 59-year-old official joined the CPC in 1985. He started his service in Dongguan, where he worked from 2004 to 2011, serving as the mayor, director of People’s Congress, and CPC secretary. In 2011, he was appointed vice-governor of Guangdong. According to mainland media, Liu, during his service in Guangdong, provided protection to the city’s prostitution industry, leading the city’s transformation into the “capital of sex”. His relatives also reportedly accumulated substantial fortunes during the time in which he had influence in the region. The announcement also reported his illegal involvement in land programs.
Liu visited Macau with a Guangdong official group in both 2013 and 2015, conducting surveys on maritime rescue and on telecommunications, respectively.
