The Transportation Infrastructure Office (GIT) has announced that it will extend the consultation period for the northern section of the Light Rapid transit (LRT) on the Macau Peninsula for another 45 days until September 28.
“Currently, society is mainly concerned with the northern section, with different opinions and demands regarding the proposals coming from different parties. Some also want the government to extend the consultation period and release more information so that the society can further its understanding and debate,” GIT said in a statement.
The office claimed that it has been constantly releasing content of proposals and information to society since the beginning of the consultation period.
GIT said that, since the northern LRT section will be serving 40 percent of the local population in the future, which has made it a very important LRT section on the Macau Peninsula, the choice of proposed routes will affect the future development of the region and the whole city.
“Since there is a relatively large amount of technical information regarding the three route proposals and the community needs time to digest and understand them, the government has decided to extend the consultation period, which was going to end on August 14, for another 45 days to September 28, in order to provide the community more time to understand [the issues] in-depth and discuss the pros and cons of the proposals of the northern LRT route.”
Nevertheless, the consultation on the LRT section that goes in front of the Kun Iam statue will still end on August 14 as planned.
Representatives from GIT and several government departments were grilled in a LRT consultation session in Areia Preta. Most of the residents who spoke expressed their anger and distrust in the plan. JPL
