Gov’t establishes interdepartmental task force to ensure consumers’ rights during CNY

The Consumer Council (CC) has announced the formation of an interdepartmental task force aimed at protecting consumer rights during the Lunar New Year (CNY) season. The task force will work to ensure market order, promote fair business practices, and enhance consumer confidence among both residents and tourists during this peak consumption period.

The CC noted this period as the “peak consumption season” of the year and a time of concern for consumer rights.

In light of this, 10 government departments held meetings to strengthen collaboration and establish a task force to ensure smooth operations during the Spring Festival.

This group comprises the CC and nine other government departments, including Customs, Judiciary Police, Public Security Police Force, Economic and Technological Development Bureau, Macao Government Tourism Office, Transport Bureau, Municipal Affairs Bureau, Pharmaceutical Administration Bureau, and Post and Telecommunications Bureau. They gathered to discuss each department’s efforts to protect consumer rights and prepare for the CNY.

Additionally, the departments are said to maintain close communication through a notification mechanism to provide timely support and services to residents and tourists in need.

The group emphasized that merchants must comply with the law and promote honest business practices to uphold Macau’s positive image as a tourist and shopping destination. The CC expressed concerns regarding the presentation of prices, which should always be displayed in MOP. Closer supervision is anticipated primarily in the CNY markets, fairs, stalls, and shops selling items related to the CNY, such as decorative goods, praying and worship items, and firecrackers.
