Gov’t to focus on carbon emission reductions in electricity contract negotiations

Macau is set to prioritize carbon emission reductions and the adoption of environmentally friendly energy sources in the upcoming electricity concession contract negotiations with CEM.

This announcement was made by the Environmental Protection Bureau (DSPA), confirming that discussions have commenced for the renewal of the current electricity concession, which will expire on December 31, 2025.

According to the DSPA, the goal is to ensure that the new contract aligns with Macau’s long-term development needs.

Late last year, the bureau announced that the local government aims to reach peak carbon emissions by 2030, with a long-term goal of achieving deep decarbonization by 2050 and near-zero emissions overall.

The concept of “deep decarbonization,” as defined by international environmental organizations, involves the systematic phase-out of carbon-emitting fuels in favor of more sustainable energy sources.

Therefore, in the recent statement, bureau has proposed enhanced obligations for CEM, particularly regarding compliance with China’s dual carbon targets.

These targets aim for peak carbon dioxide emissions by 2030 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2060.

Additionally, the DSPA is advocating for the integration of alternative, eco-friendly energy sources to replace natural gas generating units as part of the new contract stipulations. LV
