Macau Union Hospital faces backlash for long waits

Lawmaker Leong Hong Sai has reported receiving feedback from residents regarding the insufficient availability of specialist services and extended waiting times at the Macau Union Hospital.

In a written inquiry, Leong highlighted concerns about the “lack of specialized outpatient services” and the “long waiting times” faced by patients.

He reminded authorities of previously announced initiatives, such as expanding specialized outpatient services and increasing staff training at the public hospital, and sought updates on these developments.

Leong further emphasized that the purpose of establishing Macau Union Hospital is to enhance medical education, facilitate the application of scientific research in healthcare, and boost Macau’s healthcare sector, in alignment with the strategic direction of medical tourism.

Highlighting the success of health tourism in South Korea and Thailand, particularly in plastic surgery and gender-affirming procedures, he advocated for the hospital to set clear legal standards and guidelines for aesthetic medicine services to safeguard the rights and interests of both patients and practitioners.
