The government is keen for people with interdisciplinary talent in the cultural sector to extend the industry beyond Macau, director of Culture Leong Wai Man has been cited as saying.
Leong added that this is not the only possible option. In addition, to encourage “core personnel with leadership functions” into commercial entities is also an alternative for the city.
Following a recent Cultural Development Advisory Committee plenary meeting, a press conference was held, where these comments were made.
Committee member Ieng Weng Fat told the press conference that committee members were inclined towards promotion of talent acquisition and cultivation. They expressed the hope that the government would study the introduction of “leaders.” They also hoped that intangible cultural heritage can be better utilized to development the cultural industry.
When asked what type or types of talent the government wanted to acquire or nurture, Leong pointed toward the cultural and education sectors, and added that more information would be announced in due course.
In addition, she pointed out that the government wanted to introduce people with “interdisciplinary talent” or “leaders” in the cultural circle, so that their experience could be utilized to boost developments in the cultural industry, or even expand the industry across the city’s borders.
Moreover, the committee has also discussed work on Portuguese culture promotion in Macau, revolving around an upcoming Chinese-Portuguese culture and arts festival.
Ieng disclosed that translations between the Chinese and Portuguese languages were raised at the meeting. Certain members were concerned about the role of translation amid interactions between China and lusophone countries. It was also suggested that more Portuguese literature be translated into Chinese.
This year’s activities will see the usual Lusofonia Festival, illustrated book fair and exhibition, as well as singing and dance performances, among other events. A slightly bold event this year is the blending of Fado music with Chinese orchestral music.
