GP organizers will not consider canceling motorcycle race

Secretary for Social Affairs and Culture Alexis Tam says that the Macau Grand Prix organization will not consider cancelling motorcycle races during the MGP event schedule.

Following the end of the Grand Prix races on Sunday, Tam was questioned by the media about the future of the motorcycle race following the death of British motorcycle driver Daniel Hegarty on Saturday.

Tam, who is the president of the Macau Grand Prix Organizing Committee (MGPOC), noted that the organizer will improve safety procedures, but it will not shut down races.

Tam emphasized that what happened to Daniel Hegarty was an accident due to “bad luck.” He then expressed his sincere condolences to the late driver’s family.

The secretary pointed out that the organizers were adequately prepared to ensure the safery of the Guia Circuit. Tam wanted the public to understand that competitions of speed, in particular motorsports, are relatively dangerous and full of challenges.

President of the Macau Sports Bureau Pun Weng Kun also pledged that “[I] can assure [you] that our roads are absolutely safe.”

The sports authority president also guaranteed that the circuit was not affected by typhoons and added that the organizer’s first task is to uphold racers’ safety.
