IPM graduate shortlisted for International Antarctic Expedition

2 IMG_4769Cynthia Tang, a Macau Polytechnic Institute (IPM) graduate, will take part in the International Antarctic Expedition 2015. Cynthia is the first Macau representative to ever join the team, and will have the opportunity to learn from international experts on how climate change and energy usage are affecting us worldwide, IPM said in a press release.
Also known as the 2041 Expedition, founded by Robert Swan – the first person in history to walk to both the North and South Poles – the program has attracted over 4,000 applicants, but only 80 have been selected as ambassadors to embark on a journey through Antarctica.
Besides promoting “the road less travelled,” the program also focuses on promoting renewable energy and sustainable projects that can prevent or ease the effects of climate change.
Cynthia graduated from IPM’s Chinese and English Translation Program, having been granted several scholarships throughout her academic career. She currently works as an editor and marketing manager for a local tourist magazine, where she became interested in a wide range of global matters.
She took a chance and submitted an application to participate in the 2041 International Antarctic Expedition, and was successfully shortlisted as one of next year’s team members.
Selected ambassadors have to seek sponsorship to fund their expedition, and Cynthia turned to her former academic institution. IPM said that it would be giving her full support, as the institution hopes to not only focus on academic and research development, but also on nurturing students’ virtues and personal growth, said president Lei Heong Iok in a press conference.
IPM has also called on enterprises and other groups to help Cynthia achieve her goal.
“We believe Cynthia will spread the positive energy of Macau youngsters to the representatives from all over the world, and introduce them to this small but special piece of land,” president Lei added.
