Iris-authentication implemented at Border Gate

Local border clearance through the use of physiological characteristics has expanded, as local police have announced that iris authentication is now in full operation at the Border Gate Checkpoint.

Before this, the Public Security Police Force (PSP) had conducted several systems tests.

To use the technology, local ID holders must register their iris details with the local police.

Commencing this Saturday, both iris-registration and iris-facilitated border crossing will be available to local ID holders throughout the operational hours of the Border Gate checkpoint. Those intending to register can do so between 10 a.m. and 7 p.m.

The police also said the service had gained popularity, with over 81,000 people having registered to use the border crossing option during the four months between June 16 and Oct. 20.

The police added that the first 20 days of October had seen an average of 6,533 travelers use iris authentication per day, accounting for 7.87% of all automatic border clearances at Border Gate Checkpoint.

Currently, the checkpoint has 10 such channels – five in and five out – and the police said the moderate expansion of iris authentication at several border checkpoints is planned for next year.

When previously questioned by the press, the police said fingerprint authentication will be retained to provide more options to travelers.
