Japanese detained for ‘endangering state security’

The Chinese Foreign Ministry confirmed media reports that authorities have detained a Japanese citizen on suspicion of endangering China’s state security.
In a statement faxed to The Associated Press yesterday, the ministry said the Japanese Embassy in China has been notified about the investigation into the Japanese national.
The statement did not provide any other details. Japan’s Kyodo News agency, citing a diplomatic source, reported that a Japanese man who had been visiting Beijing in July might have been detained on possible allegations of spying.
Kyodo said the man worked for a group that set up exchanges between the two countries, and that he had planned to stay in Beijing between July 11 and 15, but failed to return to Japan. AP
