Japanese discount mega chain store Don Quijote will open its first Macau establishment in the Fai Chi Kei District, Japanese newspaper The Macau Shimbun recently reported.
A source close to the matter who asked to remain anonymous told the Times that the Macau store will be located in the newly-built residential estate of Trust Leisure Garden, which is being developed by local company Trust Development Ltd. The company also owns the Holiday Inn Express in Macau.
The developer has also just inaugurated Totsu Real Property and Totsu Building, its subsidiaries in Japan. The company is trying to expand its presence in East Asia, and collaborations with Japanese partners may be possible.
More popularly known as Don Don Donki or simply Donki throughout its various locations, the Japanese retailer currently operates nearly 200 outlets across Japan, as well as in Singapore, Bangkok, Hong Kong and California.
Boasting a mega floor area and a wide range of goods, the brand has earned its popularity since its premiere in March 1989. Its predecessor brand was founded in September 1980.
Merchandise sold by the retailer varies between locations, but ranges from ready-to-wear clothing, to food, jewelry, household products, cosmetic goods, tools, as well as sporting gear, party supplies and electronic products. The brand is known for utilizing gimmicky elements to attract attention. For example, it built an elliptical Ferris wheel on top of one of its Osaka stores, as well as a roller coaster above one of its Tokyo stores.
For its store in Central, Hong Kong, the brand used a treasure mining concept in its decorations. It is still unknown whether the Macau store will have a particular theme. AL
