Lawmaker calls for improved medical access for accident victims

Lawmaker Ron Lam is calling on authorities to improve mechanisms for road accident victims to access medical treatment. In a written statement to the government, Lam cited examples in which pedestrians who had been injured at crosswalks could not afford treatment costs. Lam wants changes to legislation on mandatory vehicle insurance. He said insurers often refuse to compensate victims, claiming costs cannot be calculated until treatment is complete. Lam recommended support measures like those in Hong Kong, where legislation addresses this issue. The deputy submitted several proposals in an interpellation seeking better protections for accident victims in need of healthcare.
