Local concert scene is set for growth: Chessman CEO

The concert scene in Macau is poised for further growth this year. According to Lawrence Che, CEO and founder of Chessman Entertainment Production (HK) Ltd., concert numbers are expected to increase by 10% to 20% compared with the 1,096 concerts and live performances held in 2024.
Speaking to Macao Daily, Che highlighted that, while the market remains immature, there is vast potential within Macau’s entertainment industry.
He believes that by tapping into Southeast Asian audiences and encouraging longer stays and higher spending by tourists, the market can make greater strides.
He explained that Macau’s competitive edge in hosting entertainment events stems from its high-quality hotel services and state-of-the-art concert venues. Che said that artists, their teams, and audiences praise Macau’s five-star hotels for surpassing some hotels in mainland China and even Hong Kong, delivering service that is well worth the price.
“The price is directly proportional to the service, and even exceeds expectations,” said the Chessman CEO.
One area for growth identified by Che was the need for Macau to broaden its audience base beyond mainland Chinese visitors. Che stressed the importance of diversifying the market and continuously improving the concert experience.
He suggested that local events should focus on attracting Southeast Asian artists and fans, as European and American tourists tend to attend concerts closer to home. He believes this strategy would further strengthen Macau’s position as a regional entertainment hub.
Additionally, the CEO noted a positive shift in tourist spending patterns. He explained that concertgoers are increasingly staying longer in Macau, “enjoying the dining, leisure, and entertainment offerings after concerts,” instead of immediately leaving for nearby cities like Zhuhai or Hengqin.
Advancements such as increased hotel capacity in Hengqin, relaxed travel measures for mainland residents with the multiple-entry Individual Visit Scheme (IVS), and the introduction of ride-hailing services in the city further support extended tourist stays.
Che explained that concert activity typically declines starting in September. He anticipates that this year, the slowdown will be more pronounced as several venues across the city are allocated for the upcoming National Games, limiting concert scheduling.
Nonetheless, he assured that overall concert activity will still surpass last year’s totals.
