The long weekend that included the public holiday of the Buddha’s Birthday Friday has contributed again to the rise of the average daily visitor figure of Macau.
According to data made available by the Public Security Police Force, 264,842 tourists entered Macau over the three days (May 26 to 28), a number that accounts for a daily average of 88,281.
As expected, the visitors from the mainland continue to top the chart of those visiting Macau, but the considerable influx of visitors from the neighboring region of Hong Kong, as well as foreigners, is noteworthy.
Over the course of the three-day weekend, 92,421 people from Hong Kong entered Macau, a number that accounts for about 19% of the total, while some 16,566 people from several nationalities and origins also arrived in Macau, amounting to about 3% of the total.
Earlier in the weekend and speaking to the media, the director of the Macao Government Tourism Office (MGTO), Maria Helena de Senna Fernandes, said that with the figures currently seen in visitation, the overall tourism industry of Macau has already reached a recovery level of about 50% when compared to pre-pandemic times.
According to figures cited by Senna Fernandes, Macau is now receiving, on average, some 60,000 visitors per day, expressing hopes that, with the arrival of the summer holiday season, such a figure can still be raised a little further.
Also of note from the long weekend statistics is the fact that the difference between the number of visitors arriving via the Border Gate (the preferential entry port) and the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge Port has been reduced, with the last accounting for some 81,239 entries, while Border Gate registered 96,436.
