Entering its 12th season, the Macau Orchestra will open its 2014–2015 concert season with the show “Kovacevich and Macau Orchestra,” which is to be held at 8 p.m., on September 13, at the Macau Cultural Centre grand auditorium.
The overture to the opera “The Magic Flute” by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will herald this season’s curtain-raiser, performed under the baton of Lü Jia, music director of the orchestra.
Eminent pianist Stephen Kovacevich will join the orchestra to perform Mozart’s magnificent and solemn “Piano Concerto No. 24 in C minor, K. 491.” This piece is one of only two concertos that Mozart composed in a minor key, and has long been considered one of the concerto masterpieces of the 19th century, due to its rich variety and extensive influence on the development of the symphony. In the second half of the concert, the orchestra will perform Johannes Brahms’s “Symphony No. 4,” a work that features an immensely complex structure, offering a wonderful evening that music lovers won’t want to miss.
Stephen Kovacevich is one of the most insightful musicians of his generation. He has won admiration for his interpretation of Beethoven, Brahms, Mozart and Schubert. As an experienced conductor, Kovacevich has won warm praise globally for his work on 18th and 19th century music with many of the world’s major orchestras.
