Mobile payment up 40% last year

260 million mobile payment transactions were made last year, amounting to MOP26 billion, which is an increase of 40% compared to 2021, Secretary for Economy and Finance Lei Wai Nong said.  This growth can be explained by pandemic effects and government promotional activities, which led many locals to abandon cash and credit cards and instead opt for mobile payment methods.  Member of Board of Directors in Monetary Authority Macao (AMCM) Lai Hang Kun also revealed that the use of Simple Pay will be extended to buses. “The relevant institutions are now conducting a trial of this scheme. We will cooperate with the work of the Transport Bureau and announce the relevant details in due course,” Lai said.
