Visitor arrivals in August reached new heights, according to the Statistics and Census Service (DSEC), with the number of tourists arriving in Macau last month reaching 3,086,271. The number is seven percent higher than the same period last year. Around 54 percent of these 3 million visitors were same-day visitors, reaching 1,666,809.
Tourists from mainland China again dominate the chart, reaching 2,131,498, up by 13 percent year-on-
year.
The three mainland provinces that supplied Macau with the most visitors are Guangdong (960,814), Fujian (95,450) and Hunan (86,487).
The number of mainland visitors traveling under the Individual Visit Scheme also rose by 19 percent, reaching 1,063,668.
On an international level, the number of tourists from South Korea rose by 20 percent to 58,115. There was also a two percent increase in the number of Japanese travellers to Macau in August.
However, the number of visitors from Hong Kong and Taiwan dropped by two percent and 11 percent respectively.
In terms of long-haul tourists, those from the United States and the United Kingdom registered a year-on-year increase. In contrast there were less travellers from Australia (6,621) and Canada (5,128).
The average length of stay remained unchanged from a year earlier, at 1.0 days in August 2014; overnight and same-day visitors stayed an average of 1.9 days and 0.2 days respectively.
In the first eight months of this year, Macau has received a total of 21,123,512 visitors, eight percent higher than the same period a year ago. Around 54 percent of those visitors were same-day visitors.
Similar to the trend in August, the number of tourists from the mainland and South Korea in the first eight months saw considerable increases of 14 and 19 percent respectively.
