Outer wall of old building in Coloane Village collapses

A section of an old building’s outer wall in Coloane Village collapsed twice on Tuesday amid torrential rain, raising concerns over the safety of aging structures in the popular tourist area.
On Tuesday morning, the Macao Meteorological and Geophysical Bureau (SMG) issued yellow, red, and black rainstorm warnings, indicating heavy rain at times on the outlying islands.
According to the Public Security Police (PSP), no injuries were reported and no other facilities were damaged.
By evening, the same building’s outer wall collapsed again, scattering debris.
Yeong Keng Hoi, president of the Coloane Residents Association, and Lam Cheng Teng, community advisor of the Outlying Islands Committee, expressed concern that while many tourists have enjoyed strolling through Coloane’s old town in recent years, the number of similar aging houses, including vacant ones, has increased.
They hope that owners and stakeholders will proactively maintain their buildings to minimize the impact.
Heavy rain on Tuesday caused flooding in many parts of the outlying islands.
Floodwaters on Rua de la Rencontre in Coloane quickly rose to the road surface and began flowing rapidly.
During the same period, Avenida da República was knee-deep in water, leaving residents no option but to walk through it.
Coloane residents are urging the government to pay more attention to the situation in Coloane Village and Hac Sa. Times Reporter
