UK | New newspaper to launch despite declining readership

Britain Independent NewspaperA British publisher says it is launching the country’s first new national paper in 30 years — despite rapidly declining newspaper sales and readers switching to online websites.
Trinity Mirror says The New Day will stand out from other British newspapers because it will be politically neutral and will not have an op-ed column.
Alison Phillips, who will edit the paper, said yesterday: “We will just tell the story straight” because readers do not want to be told what they should think.
The paper will hit newsstands next week. It will have a presence on social media, but will not have a website.
Earlier this month, the Independent newspaper published its final print edition and announced it was changing to a digital-only format. AP

Brazil | Police order arrest of Rousseff’s election guru

Brazilian police have ordered the arrest of the marketing expert who helped President Dilma Rousseff win two elections — a development that sees a long-running corruption probe move a step closer to the president.
In a televised news conference  yesterday, police accused Joao Santana and his wife, Monica Moura, of receiving millions of dollars in illicit funds from Odebrecht, a major construction company under investigation for its relationship with the state-run oil company Petrobras.
The two are currently in the Dominican Republic. According to their lawyer, they are willing to cooperate with any police inquiry.
As well as masterminding Rousseff’s 2010 and 2014 election victories, Santana also ran former president Lula da Silva’s successful 2006 campaign. AP
