The Macau University of Science and Technology (MUST) has submitted an application to the Macau government for a new campus in Hengqin, according to president Joseph Hun-wei Lee. The request, made late last year, is part of the university’s long-term expansion plan, driven by a lack of space on its current campus in Taipa.
Lee highlighted that the new campus would aim to foster scientific collaboration with mainland China and the Greater Bay Area, focusing on fields such as traditional Chinese medicine, high technology, environmental science, and engineering.
Speaking during the university’s Open Day, Lee said that the university’s efforts in Hengqin have already begun, with the establishment of the MUST Innovative Research Institution over the past three years, alongside other initiatives related to material science.
“We have been building the MUST Innovative Research Institute in Hengqin for three years, and we’re building up several platforms, notably the two state key labs that have a base there. We are also building a significant enterprise in material science and engineering focusing on medical displays and biomaterials,” Lee said, as cited in a TDM report.
In addition to expanding in Hengqin, MUST is diversifying its academic offerings, introducing new bachelor’s programs in global operations management, acupuncture and massage, biomedical sciences, and doctoral programs in education, environmental sciences, biomedical sciences, engineering, and leisure management.
Moreover, Lee noted that student enrollment would remain steady, with new enrollment levels expected to stay around 7,000 for the next academic year.
Featuring nearly 200 activities, including display booths, exhibitions, and interactive sessions, the Open Day on Sunday highlighted MUST’s academic and scientific achievements.
The event drew over 5,000 visitors, offering insights into research and campus life.
Founded in 2000, MUST’s current campus in Taipa spans 210,000 square meters and serves over 23,000 students. Staff Reporter
