University of Coimbra and CityU offer joint postgrad program aimed at local students

The Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra in Portugal and the City University of Macau (CityU) signed an agreement yesterday creating a joint postgraduate diploma course for. local students who wish to engage in the field of International Economic Relations.
At the signing ceremony which took place at the Portuguese Consulate General in Macau, it was explained that besides economic relations, the program also includes Portuguese and English language courses, specifically the technical use of them in economics.
The program is aimed at local graduates from the fields of economics and finance who possess a good command of the English language.
With certain delays that have been revealed, the program will take two academic years (four semesters), of which three semesters will take place in Macau. An additional semester will be held in Portugal, where students will enroll in subjects such as Political Economy and European Union (EU) governance as well as a range of other optional subjects according to their field of interest.
A range of activities including field trips and visits to companies operating in the field will also be part of the program, which will be mostly taught in English.
At the event, the Consul-General of Portugal for Macau and Hong Kong, Paulo Cunha Alves, noted the current good relations between China and Portugal that have been developed recently through creativity and cultural exchange as well as in the education field.
Cunha Alves also said, “the sustainable growth of student exchange between the two countries is a trend that benefits the role of Macau.”
Attending the event virtually, the director of the Faculty of Economics of the University of Coimbra, Álvaro Garrido, underlined the contribution of the multidisciplinary focus of the schools involved, on the development and qualification of postgraduate education at the faculty. He noted that the cooperation between the two institutions set to begin in the next academic year is an ambitious project.
In his turn, and representing CityU, the director of the Faculty of Economics, Adrian Cheung, was very optimistic about the partnership, expressing hopes that other cooperation programs between the two universities could begin after this initial project.
Professor Jun Liu, CityU’s rector, also added that the institution is proud to be able to offer this opportunity to the CityU students to advance in their studies and increase their skills and proficiencies to help the future development of Macau.
Representing the Portuguese university, Derio Chan said that the new program “opens a new door so that local students can know in detail the political and economic structure of the EU as well as take advantage of the accumulated knowledge that the University of Coimbra has on the matter.”
