33 cases of alleged taxi malpractice recorded during ‘Golden Week’

Authorities have reported 33 cases of suspected unlawful conduct by taxi drivers during the Golden Week holiday.

According to police and transport authorities, all cases involved illegal surcharges, with drivers allegedly claiming that certain locations such as the Border Posts, the airport, and ferry terminals, required a special surcharge.

The Transport Bureau (DSAT) confirmed that these cases have been forwarded to the Public Security Police Force (PSP) for further investigation.

Additionally, DSAT reported a daily average of almost 80,000 taxi trips during the holiday period, a significant increase of around 10,000 trips compared to typical weekends.

The two public bus operators also saw increased activity, carrying some 3.62 million passengers between Oct. 2 and Oct. 6 – an increase of approximately 10% more than the same period last year.

The daily average number of passengers during the week was 723,000, peaking on Oct. 1 and Oct. 2, when the number exceeded 800,000 passengers per day.

DSAT added that during the Golden Week period, the two operators conducted an average of more than 9,600 bus trips per day. RM
