Sun Yingsha and Lin Shidong claim victory at WTT Champions Macao 2024

The WTT Champions Macao 2024 wrapped up with exciting finals, where China’s Sun Yingsha and Lin Shidong claimed the Women’s and Men’s Singles titles, respectively, at the Macao East Asian Games Dome.

The finals featured an all-Chinese showdown in the women’s category and an exciting match between Lin Shidong and Dang Qiu in the men’s final, both of which took place last evening.

In the women’s final, Sun went up against Wang Yidi and secured a 4-2 victory against the world number four.

Sun, already a two-time WTT Champions winner this season, returned to Macau determined to reclaim the title she first won in 2022.

Backed by an enthusiastic crowd, Sun delivered another commanding performance, taking her total to five WTT Champions trophies and continuing her dominance on the global stage.

After her intense match, Sun expressed her gratitude for the support from fans, stating, “The crowd has been amazing this week. Ever since the Paris Olympics, WTT Macao Champions is the first match in this new cycle, and there were so many fans coming here to cheer for me and Team China.”

Following her victory, the world number one added, “I want to thank all the fans for coming here to see the action and also wish everyone a happy Mid-Autumn Festival.”

In the men’s final, Lin of China faced off against Germany’s Dang, emerging victorious with a decisive 4-0 win.

During the men’s singles semifinals, 19-year-old Lin delivered a stunning upset by defeating top seed Wang Chuqin 4-1.

Lin’s impressive journey to the finals included victories over Lin Yun-Ju of Chinese Taipei and Japan’s Tomokazu Harimoto, establishing him as a formidable contender.

“I think I exceeded my own expectations in this event. I honestly didn’t expect to make it to the finals, let alone win the championship. In the previous event, I was really eager to win the title – I desperately wanted it. This time around, I was just as motivated, but I ended up performing even better than I had imagined,” said Lin.

Spectators at the WTT Champions Macao 2024 enjoyed an exhilarating matches at the Macao East Asian Games Dome, showcasing the finest talents in table tennis.

With two new champions crowned, the table tennis world now turns its attention to the next WTT Series event, China Smash 2024, taking place in Beijing from September 26 to October 6. Nadia Shaw
